Basic Commands

Fractions in LaTeX are typeset with the \frac{numerator}{denominator} command:

  • $\frac{1}{2}$ produces $\frac{1}{2}$.

The style and size of the fraction will depend on whether the command is used inline with text or in display format. Here is the same command in display style (e.g. $$\frac{1}{2}$$):

\begin{align} \frac{1}{2} \end{align}

  • Use \tfrac to force small fractions in a display environment: $$\tfrac{3}{4}$ produces
\begin{align} \tfrac{3}{4} \end{align}
  • Use \dfrac to force large fractions in a line of text: $\dfrac{3}{4}$ produces $\dfrac{3}{4}$.
  • Use a large slash: $3/4$ produces $3/4$ and $3\Big/4$ produces $3\Big/4$.
